Dedicated trout rods are much slower in action and softer throughout than LRF rods. With a majority of trout lures (spoons, spinners and plugs) designed for use on a simple straight retrieve, this soft, cushioning action minimises hook-pulls when a trout aggressively takes or jumps. They also provide an advantage of small streams when overhead casting may not be easy - the softer action enabling the angler to flick a lure across the water from different angles with less effort required to make the rod work.
